Redsn0w has been updated to 0.9.9b8 which allows users to jailbreak iOS 5 and iOS 5.0.1 beta for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch and iPad. This is a tethered jailbreak except for iPhone 3GS with old bootrom. Also, this method will update your baseband. So unlockers, please stay away from redsn0w until PwnageTool is updated. Or, you can use Sn0wBreeze to create custom IPSW which preserves baseband.
Here is a step by step guide to Jailbreak iOS 5 and 5.0.1 using Redsn0w(Redsnow) 0.9.9b8
- Download iOS 5 or iOS 5.0.1 beta for your iDevice
- Download Redsn0w 0.9.9b8 for Mac or Windows and put them in same folder as that of IPSW file: Redsn0w 0.9.9b8 for Mac or Redsn0w 0.9.9b8 for Windows
- Open Redsn0w. Click Jailbreak button
- Plug in your iDevice and make sure it is off. Now click Next
- On screen instructions would appear to put the iDevice in DFU mode. Do as instructed
- Redsn0w will now prepare jailbreak data.
- Select ‘Install Cydia’ and continue.
- Now Redsn0w will do its stuff and Jailbreak your iDevice. It may reboot once.
Boot Tethered on new Devices
For those of you on new bootrom (i.e except iPhone 3GS with old bootrom), you’ll need to run redsn0w again to booth tethered:
Congratulations. Your Device is now jailbroken on iOS 5/ iOS 5.0.1 beta
