Earlier this month, some rumors had surfaced that NVIDIA’s Tegra-powered netbooks will be running Google’ s Chrome OS in development. But now, it has been confirmed by NVIDIA’s GM of mobile business Mike Rayfield to jkOnTheRun that the company expects to see Tegra-based smartphones using Windows Mobile and Android and Smartbooks or netbooks would use Chrome OS or Windows CE.

The Tegra platform is different to ION in that it pairs an ARM-based processor with an Nvidia GeForce GPU (ION pairs an Intel Atom CPU with the Nvidia 9400M graphics). The benefits of Tegra includes the ability to handle 1080p video, HD Flash, GPS, Wi-Fi, 3G and a huge battery life. All of this while being very energy efficient.

These OSes, Rayfield believes, would make the most of Tegra’s frugal power requirements. The chipset may play back video content with power draw of 1W or less, while an Atom CPU, as claimed, would require several times that. Nonetheless, Tegra is capable of high-definition playback, and NVIDIA believe that in combination with the surge in internet-based apps, consumers will happily give up “dehydrated laptops” running traditional Windows desktop OSes and instead choose longer runtimes, broader connectivity and increased HD performance from Tegra Smartbooks.

The amount of energy your computer consumes everyday, not only affects your electricity bills but it is also responsible for the carbon footprints that you leave and hence the total set of GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions caused directly and indirectly by you. Turning to a few changes in habits and system settings can save you money and the environment.

>>Down the Hard drive: Set your computer to put your hard drive to sleep when it’s not in use. This will extend the life of your drive as well as save energy. The sleep settings can be used to decide how long the disk(s) should be idle before they are “put to sleep”.

>>Put down the Energy Mongers: Even when your cell phone isn’t charging, that big plug it uses is warm – because it’s using energy even when it’s doing nothing. Physically unplug chargers from the wall to keep them from silently sucking down wattage while you’re not using them

>>Finish-off the unecessary processes: Is your computer constantly scanning for Bluetooth devices or wifi networks when there isn’t one in sight or you’re plugged into the network? Audit your constantly running programs – and the ones that start up automatically – and shut down any you don’t absolutely need.

>> Use Power Switches: Energy-saving “smart” power switches can cut off juice to everything plugged into it – like your computer peripherals – when your machine is shut down.

>> Virtualization is Good: Dual-boot or virtualize your operating systems on a single computer to reduce the number of humming boxes under your desk.

Take care of your PCs.

The company has several patents pending and are currently looking for partners for this project. No other details are available about this project. We seriously hope that this will bet a good step towards eco-computing!

This is Part 2 of the series of articles which will have many new (and old) tips and tricks to enhance windows 7. Stay tuned for more!
Part 1: Patch uxtheme.dll And Apply Custom MSStyles

The Windows 7 installer makes Windows 7 as the default OS and renames XP as “Previous version of Windows”. This is pretty annoying, and it becomes worse if you have both 64 and 32 bit installed on the same computer. It shows both of them as same OS.In windows XP, all the boot entries were stored in boot.ini in C:/ drive. Changing the descriptions was as easy as editing boot.ini. With Vista and Windows 7, Boot editing require commandline tools like bcdedit.exe.

For novice users, there is a GUI tool named EasyBCD which can modify and edit bootloader entries in Windows 7 and Vista. Here is a step by step guide to change OS descriptions

1) Download EasyBCD from this link: Download From Neosmart

2) Open EasyBCD and Goto Settings in left pane.

3) Choose “Previous Version Of Windows” in the dropdown menu present in “Entry Based Settings”.

4) Change “Name” to anything that you like. Do not change the Drive Option.

5) Hit “Save Settings”. Reboot and Enjoy.

More windows 7 tips and tricks will follow soon!

Despite, heavy outbreak of digital content, the music industry has still not found their preferred way of distributing their content (aside from iTunes anyways) and of course, they are various other things for that. SanDisk has announce a new format called slotMusic, which has found its patrons in the big four (EMI, Warner Music, Universal Music Group and Sony BMG) of the music industry. The basic idea is more or less bundling DRM-free music on memory cards. This move, by the music industry, is an attempt to try unrestricted music files on microSD memory cards to improve sales of physical media. Each unit will contain an album, plus extras on a memory card that can be played on mobile phones, PCs and some portable MP3 players. The music on slotMusic comes without copyright protection, so it can be used on almost all computers, mobile phones and music players — but it won’t play on an iPod, which doesn’t have a micro-SD memory slot. It has one gigabyte of memory, and the music tracks are played back at high quality.

Also most computers also don’t have microSD slots; according to EMI’s press release, there will be a “tiny USB sleeve” packaged with each card, and the “high quality” format means up to 320kbps MP3. From the given description, it seems like it would be no harder to transfer the tracks to an iPod (via a computer) than to most other players.

Seems like labels have finally recognized that providing features and convenience to customers is preferable to suing them.SlotMusic is scheduled to be introduced in mid-October at retail outlets including Wal-Mart and Best Buy, so we won’t have to wait too long to see how this works out for the music industry and SanDisk.

It only launched a few weeks ago, but it looks like NVIDA could already be set to cut the price of its top-end GeForce GTX 280 graphics card — a move that would be prompted, as you might have guessed, by AMD’s cheaper but powerful Radeon HD 4800 series. According to HotHardware, that word comes from “multiple NVIDIA board partners,” who say that the card could be dropping to as low as $499 (the same as AMD’s competing card). One board partner reportedly added that the price “may be a little higher, or potentially even a little lower.” Obviously, all of that is still up in the air until we hear from NVIDIA itself but, as HotHardware points out, it could certainly pay off to hold out a couple of weeks if you’ve been considering taking the plunge on one of these.
